Urge Your Member of Congress to Co-Sponsor H.Con.Res. 402 Supporting the President's New Freedom Commission on Mental Health

May 24, 2002

THE ISSUE AT HAND

On April 29, President Bush issued an Executive Order creating the New Freedom Commission on Mental Health.

On May 14, 2002, U.S. Representatives Marcy Kaptur (D-OH), Marge Roukema (R-NJ), Patrick Kennedy (D-RI), Charles Norwood (R-GA), Peter DeFazio (D-OR), James Greenwood (R-PA) and Chris Smith (R-NJ) introduced House Concurrent Resolution 402 supporting the Commission.

ACTION NEEDED

Please call, FAX, or email your U.S. Senators and U.S. Representatives and ask them to cosponsor H.Con.Res. 402. All Senators and Representatives may be reached through the Capitol Switchboard, 202-2243121, or via NASW's Congress Web.

If you are not sure who your Representative is, the Capitol Switchboard can determine which one by zip code. Once you've been connected to an office, be sure to ask to speak with the "Mental Health Legislative Assistant" and ask him/her if the Senator or Representative will cosponsor H.Con.Res. 402.

SAMPLE SCRIPT

As a constituent, social worker, and member of the National Association of Social Workers, I urge Representative (name) to support the House Concurrent Resolution 402. This important piece of legislation expresses that improving the mental health service delivery system is a national priority and praises the establishment of the New Freedom Commission on Mental Health by President Bush in an attempt to tackle this critical issue.
