THE ISSUE AT HAND
Access to health care is an issue of vital importance to all Americans, but especially to social workers. NASW and the social work profession at large historically have advocated on behalf of universal access to health and mental health care. On April 4, 2002, U.S. Representatives John Conyers (D-MI), Janice Schakowsky (D-IL), John Tierney (D-MA), Donna Christian-Christensen (D-VI), David Bonior (D-MI), Dennis Kucinich (D-OH), Earl Hilliard (D-AL), Maurice Hinchey (D-NY), Jerrold Nadler (D-NY), Donald Payne (D-NJ), Chaka Fattah (D-PA), Peter DeFazio (D-OR), John Lewis (D-GA), Tammy Baldwin (D- WI), Stephanie Tubbs Jones (D-OH), Barney Frank (D-MA), Henry Waxman (D-CA), Cynthia McKinney (D-GA), James Langevin (D-RI), George Miller (D-CA), Alcee Hastings (D-FL), Patsy Mink (D-HI), John Olver (D-MA), Bennie Thompson (D-MS), Pete Stark (D-CA), Julia Carson (D-IN), and Michael Capuno (D-MA) introduced House Concurrent Resolution 99 expressing the sense of Congress that legislation should be enacted by October 2004 ensuring that "every person in the United States" has access to affordable, high quality health care.

Please call, FAX, or email your U.S. Senators and U.S. Representatives and ask them to cosponsor H. Con. Res. 99. All Senators and Representatives may be reached through the Capitol Switchboard, 202-2243121, or via NASW's Congress Web.
If you are not sure who your Representative is, the Capitol Switchboard can determine which one by zip code. Once you've been connected to an office, be sure to ask to speak with the "Health Care Legislative Assistant" and ask him/her if the Senator or Representative will cosponsor H. Con. Res. 99.
