Send Your Senators A Mother's Day TANF Message!

BACKGROUND

NASW is partnering with the National Council of Churches TANF Advocacy Network to "Tell Senators to Give Low-income Mothers a Gift on Mother's Day!"

It continues to be unclear what is going to happen in the U.S. Senate with regard to TANF, despite the fact that the current short-term extension will expire on June 30. This latest advocacy action is an attempt to keep the Senate focused on the need to act definitively on TANF, whether it is a full five-year reauthorization or a long-term extension. NASW is continuing to advocate for improvements in the Senate bill.

ACTION NEEDED

Mother's Day Festivities - Mother's Day is May 9

1. Get the message below to both of your U.S. Senators by any means possible, such as:

(a) handwriting it in a Mother's Day card (or cutting it out from this message, enclosing it in a card) and sending or delivering the card to their STATE offices (DO NOT MAIL to the Washington office because of delays caused by security procedures)

(b) faxing it to the Senators in their Washington offices or

(c) e-mailing it to the Senators

You can find information on e-mail, fax, and state office addresses for your Senators at http://www.senate.gov , clicking on their individual websites or on NASW's Web site at http://63.66.87.48/cweb4/index.cfm?orgcode=NASW Scroll to the bottom of the page and enter your zip code.

2. Send a copy of the message to the Editor of your local newspaper with a note saying that you have just sent this message to your Senators and that you urge the paper to carry an editorial supporting the same position. All Senate offices monitor the home state papers.

3. Raise the question of TANF reauthorization with your Senators if you have the opportunity to talk with them at home or in Washington

THE MESSAGE

Give low-income mothers a real gift on Mother's Day! Pass TANF legislation that would:

  • Increase funding to provide child care for the children of low-income workers
  • Reinstate benefits for immigrant families
  • Expand education and training opportunities for low-income parents
  • Help mothers balance work and parenting by keeping the current work requirements
  • Allow states to extend TANF benefits beyond the time limits for families that face severe barriers to employment

AS ALWAYS, THANKS FOR YOUR ADVOCACY!
