Legislative Issues

Promoting the Profession-Enhancing Social Well-Being

The social work profession was founded in social change. Through the profession's history, social workers have sought to ensure that all people have equal access to the resources and opportunities that allow them to meet their basic needs. The Government Relations Department at NASW upholds this challenge by advocating for the association to Members of Congress and regulatory agencies that so often hold the authority in their hands to influence policy. Each year, NASW's Government Relations unit develops a legislative agenda, which asserts the Association's legislative priorities for that legislative cycle. NASW's legislative agenda is always consistent with the thrust of NASW policies in Social Work Speaks that was developed by members of the association at Delegate Assembly. Following are the key issues that NASW has been working on in the 111th Congress. Although a great part of the association's energy is spent on these issues, NASW's work on Capitol Hill is not limited to these areas but driven by the agenda that Members of Congress set for themselves.

Child Welfare | Civil Rights | Economic Equity | Education
| Health | Loan Forgiveness | Mental Health
