New Elementary School Counseling Grants Awarded

Information Needed on Social Work Involvement

The Office of Safe and Drug Free Schools in the U.S. Department of Education has released information on grants awarded for FY 2001 under the Elementary School Counseling Demonstration Program. All 58 districts awarded first-year grants in FY 2000 were awarded second-year funding and 31 new grants were awarded. A list of new grantees follows. Total grantees number 89 schools districts in 34 states.

A fact sheet on the school counseling program, with a combined list of the two years of grantees is posted on NASW's Web site: www.socialworkers.org/advocacy/updates/072601.htm.

INFORMATION REQUEST: NASW is compiling information on grants in which there is social work involvement -- in developing the grant application, in administering the program, as the staff hired under the program -- or any other capacity.

The information provided for the first round of grants has been very helpful in advocating for the program. A list of first-year grantees with KNOWN social work involvement follows. If you are aware of any additional first-year grants with social work involvement, please email that information as well. The full list of first-year grantees appears last. We appreciate your assistance.

FUTURE ACTION: NASW will soon be asking for your advocacy on third year funding (FY 2002) for the program. Congressional appropriators have warned that funding is extremely tight due to the large tax cut and downturn in the economy, so constituent contacts will be critical to maintaining, and if we're lucky, increasing funding for the program. Funding for FY 2000 was $20 million; for FY 2001 - $30 million.

In the meantime, keep up your advocacy with the ESEA Conference Committee (for more information, see ACTION ALERT of July 27, 2001 on the NASW Web site: www.socialworkers.org/advocacy/alerts/072701.htm.)
