Questions about Effects on Benefits to Insureds

Q: As an insured, what changes will I see?

A: The creation of NASW Assurance Services does not change anything for existing NASW member insureds – your current products, services, benefits and insurance premium remain unchanged. A Board composed of a majority of social workers will continue to control and oversee the activities of the organization. The new structure, however, will allow NASW Assurance Services to offer new and enhanced insurance, financial and other products and services.

Q: Will the new organization be able to offer health/medical insurance?

A: NASW Assurance Services understands that many NASW members would like it to offer health insurance, and plans to explore potential product offerings and benefits in this area, but health/medical insurance will not be offered initially.

Q: Does this mean my insurance premiums will be reduced?

A: While your insurance premiums will remain the same initially, the changeover to NASW Assurance Services will provide greater control over costs, as well as greater control over the selection and quality of insurance providers.

Q: Will I be dealing with a new insurance company or representative because of this change?

A: You will continue to deal with your current insurance carrier on all matters, including premium payments and claims. That said, you will likely see NASW Assurance Services taking on a more visible and active role as we represent your interests with current and future insurance carriers.

Q: How does this change impact our relationship with insurance vendors?

A: NASW Assurance Services will take a more active role as a partner with our insurance and financial services providers on behalf of our members, both in terms of marketing as well as customer service. NASW Assurance Services views this new relationship as a win-win, and believes our insurance carriers share that view as well.

Questions about Effects on NASW Members In General

Q: How does this benefit me?

A: NASW Assurance Services will now be able to offer you a broader array of member benefit programs from which to choose. In fact, we are already looking into a variety of new program possibilities for the future.
NASW Assurance Services also will be able to provide better financial support to your professional association and its important social work initiatives.

Q: Does this mean my NASW dues will be reduced?

A: No, NASW dues are set through a process that falls outside of the decision making that will take place concerning the support of NASW Assurance Services.

Q: Why should this change make me want to join NASW?

A: NASW is the largest national organization representing the interests of social workers in all practice areas, and the social work profession generally. This change allows NASW, through NASW Assurance Services, to offer new and improved member benefits and services. It also will help generate important support for NASW’s ongoing advocacy work – work that is becoming increasingly important as demands on our profession continue to rise.

Q: How will this change help NASW chapters across the country?

A: A strengthened NASW should mean stronger NASW chapters. NASW Assurance Services support will likely be used in three areas: to improve member services, to help membership recruitment and retention initiatives, and to provide support for national programs designed to advance the profession, such as the Social Work Reinvestment Initiative and the Social Work Public Education Campaign. To the extent that support helps to increase membership and strengthen NASW’s national voice and programs, NASW activities and mission at the local level should be aided.

NASW Assurance Services provides more than 70,000 social workers with access to professional liability insurance and personal insurance protection.
