NASW Celebrates Asian Pacific American (APA) Heritage Month
May is Asian Pacific American (APA) Heritage Month - a celebration
of Asians and Pacific Islanders in the United States . Much
like Black History Month and Women's History Month, APA Heritage
Month originated from a congressional bill.
In May 1990, President George H. W. Bush designated May as
Asian Pacific American Heritage Month. This month c ommemorates
the first Japanese immigrants to the United States , who arrived
on May 7, 1843 , and marks the anniversary of the completion
of the transcontinental railroad on May 10, 1869 . The majority
of the workers who performed the often-dangerous job of laying
the tracks were Chinese immigrants.
APA Heritage Month also recognizes the vital role Asians and
Pacific Islanders have played in further enriching American
society through their vibrant cultures and rich history. Their
contributions are apparent in the colorful traditions, customs,
food, languages, and religions originating from the very diverse
ethnicities of Asia and the Pacific Islands , which have infiltrated
communities across the nation.
Asian Pacific American Heritage Month is celebrated with community
festivals, government-sponsored activities, and educational
activities for students. This year's theme is "Freedom
for All - A Nation We Call Our Own."
