World Social Work Day 2009

International social work is important because social work is the profession of hope. It is not simple optimism that defines us, but grounded hope. Hope encourages social workers to practice in every community in every country -- whether it's a large city, a small rural town, or a remote village.

We do not deny the harsh realities of our societies and our world. We know how difficult it is for people to overcome suffering, setbacks, disappointments and bad luck. Even knowing this, social workers don't give up on trying to help individuals, families, communities and governments change for the better.

We recognize that hope transcends reality, and that the collective efforts of social workers from all of our countries can, and will, continue to improve and enrich the world in which we live.

On behalf of the North American Region of the International Federation of Social Workers, NASW wishes you a happy World Social Work Day.

This video was created on behalf of the North American Region of IFSW of which Dr. Jim Kelly, NASW President, is president.

The general theme for the World Social Work Day 2009 is "Social Work and Social Development: The Agenda"
