Description of All National Electoral Positions
National Board of Directors
PRESIDENT-ELECT: (One Year Term)
Duties
The President-Elect shall serve for one year before assuming the duties of President. During the one-year term, the President-Elect shall be available to work in close collaboration with the President and shall perform duties as assigned by the President.
Bylaws, Article V - Officers, under C. Term of Office - "Provision shall be made for the election of the President of the Association one year in advance of his/her assumption of duties of the office. This person shall be known as the President-Elect. In the event of death, disability, or resignation of the President-Elect before he/she takes office as President, the person receiving the next largest number of votes for the office of President shall assume the office and duties of the President-Elect."
Time Commitment
Attends four Board meetings annually (each, one to two days in duration) and Executive Committee meetings as scheduled (either in conjunction with Board meetings or separately). May be asked to represent the President internally or externally.
PRESIDENT: (Three Year Term)
Duties
The President shall be the presiding officer of the Delegate Assembly, the Board of Directors, and the Executive Committee, and an ex-officio member of all committees and related entities. Serves as a member of the NASW Foundation and as trustee of the NASW Insurance Trust Board. She/he shall be available to consult with the Executive Director between meetings of the Board of Directors; shall represent the Board of Directors between meetings, and shall report to the Board of Directors all important interim actions. The President shall, in consultation with the Board of Directors, appoint the chairpersons of all organizational units responsible to the Board of Directors whose selection is not otherwise specified in the Bylaws; and shall appoint all personnel of all organizational units responsible to the Board of Directors whose selection is not otherwise specified in the Bylaws, after consultation with the appropriate chairperson. Except with the sanction of the Board of Directors, the President shall not appoint a person to more than one post. The President shall participate in recruitment activities coordinated with the national office and local chapters as scheduling permits.
Time Commitment
Attends four Board meetings annually (each, one to two days in duration) and Executive Committee meetings as scheduled (either in conjunction with Board meetings or separately). The President makes presentations on average at 10-18 events annually. Represents the Association at major governmental and civic meetings. Meets with the Executive Director regularly on overall Association business.
VICE PRESIDENT: (Three-Year Term)
Duties
"Fulfills the duties of the President in the event of the President's absence or disability" (Bylaws, Article V.B.2). Undertakes duties assigned by the President. Chairs the Program Committee and may be asked to chair additional volunteer units. Collaborates with the chair of the Finance Committee in recommending an annual program for the Association. Represents the Association at meetings and functions. Participates in membership recruitment activities.
Time Commitment
Attends four Board meetings annually (each, one to two days in duration) and Executive Committee meetings as scheduled (either in conjunction with Board meetings or separately). The Program Committee generally meets once per year. The Vice President may be asked to chair additional volunteer units or may be asked to represent NASW at organizations and/or chapters.
SECRETARY: (Three-Year Term)
Duties
Responsible for the "minutes of meetings of the Delegate Assembly, the Board of Directors, and the Executive Committee, as well as all non-fiscal records of the Association" (Bylaws, Article V.B.3). Undertakes such other duties as may be assigned by the President.
Time Commitment
Attends four Board meetings annually (each, one to two days in duration) and Executive Committee meetings as scheduled (either in conjunction with Board meetings or separately). Reviews and approves minutes of the Board and Executive Committee meetings. May represent NASW internally and externally as requested.
TREASURER: (Three-Year Term)
Duties
Responsible for "the receipt, deposit, disbursal, withdrawal and investment of all funds of the Association and shall render periodic financial statements to the Board of Directors and Executive Committee" (Bylaws, Article V.B.4). Shall serve as chair of the Finance and Audit Committees, collaborates with the chair of the Program Committee in recommending an annual budget for the Association.
Time Commitment
Attends four Board meetings annually (each, one to two days in duration) and Executive Committee meetings as scheduled (either in conjunction with Board meetings or separately). Chairs one to two Finance Committee meetings annually and one Audit Committee meeting. Meets with the Executive Director and designated staff regularly to monitor financial matters. May represent NASW internally and externally as requested.
BOARD MEMBER-AT-LARGE (Three-Year Term)
The Board of Directors: "Shall exercise all the powers of the Association deciding upon ongoing policy and priorities, policy implementation and the equitable allocation of financial resources under the broad policy and priority guidelines established by the membership of the Association in the meetings of the Delegate Assembly" (Bylaws, Article VI.A.). Reviews, deliberates and acts on all policy matters in the Association.
Specific Duties
- To serve as a member of the legally accountable policy making team of the Association.
- To represent the National Association of Social Workers membership as a whole in consideration of policy issues, operations, and external relations and to work cooperatively to develop linkages between chapters and national.
- To function as a member of the Board of Directors in accordance with the broad policy and priority guidelines established by the Delegate Assembly.
- To participate on Board committees, task forces, and other Association units as assigned.
- To represent NASW, as assigned, with other national social work organizations and national professional organizations.
- To assist student representatives to develop linkages between students, schools, chapters and national.
- To facilitate and support the NASW Foundation.
- To participate in membership recruitment activities.
- To relate directly to the President of the National Board of Directors on matters of organizational policy.
Time Commitment
- Attends four Board meetings annually, of up to two days each.
- Attends meetings of National units to which the Board member may be assigned - this may result in attendance at generally one to two additional meetings.
- May attend meetings of other organizations to represent the Board of NASW, as assigned.
REGIONAL BOARD MEMBER (Three-Year Term)
The Board of Directors: "Shall exercise all the powers of the Association deciding upon ongoing policy and priorities, policy implementation and the equitable allocation of financial resources under the broad policy and priority guidelines established by the membership of the Association in the meetings of the Delegate Assembly" (Bylaws, Article VI.A.). Reviews, deliberates and acts on all policy matters in the Association.

STUDENT BOARD MEMBER:
(Two-Year Term), one BSW student, one MSW student
Duties
Has the responsibility of representing the interest of student members of the Association. Represents NASW with organizations as assigned. Participates in recruitment activities coordinated with the national office and the local chapters. Participates on Board committees and task forces by appointment. Acts to facilitate communication between student members and the National Board.
Time Commitment
Attends four Board meetings annually, of up to two days each. Attends annually one to two meetings of assigned national units. Represents student members at chapter meetings as appropriate.
NATIONAL COMMITTEE ON NOMINATIONS AND LEADERSHIP IDENTIFICATION (NCNLI)
REGIONAL REPRESENTATIVES: (Three Year Term)
The National Committee on Nominations and Leadership Identification (NCNLI), authorized by Article VIII of the NASW Bylaws, is composed of thirteen (13) persons, one selected from each electoral area, whose alternate shall be in each case the candidates receiving the second largest number of votes to each electoral region. (Article VIII.B.1.a.)
Duties
This committee is charged with:
- Selecting at least two candidates for each position in the regular selection of Association officers, Board members, and representatives to the Committee on Nominations and Leadership Identification;
- Certifying to the Secretary of the Association the completed ballots of candidates;
- Receiving nominations by petition; and
- Working closely with chapters and staff and maintaining a leadership roster to be used by the President of the Association for committee and task force appointments and to aid in the selection of candidates.
The Board of Directors sets the policy of the Association, and NCNLI is charged with carrying out policy as it may relate to the nomination process. However, NCNLI is completely autonomous in its selection of candidates, working within the Association policy.
Time Commitment
The Committee shall meet at least once a year – one meeting shall be held primarily for the purpose of preparing the slate for elections. Other meetings may be scheduled as resources and need indicate.
