National Provider Identifier

Compliance Deadline: May 23, 2007

NASW has established a NPI hotline to provide information to members and assist with their questions. To access the hotline, call 202-408-8600, ext. 497.

The National Provider Identifier (NPI) regulations are the final set of standards to be promulgated under the HIPAA Administrative Simplification provisions. Social workers and other health care practitioners are strongly urged to register for the NPI well in advance of the May 23, 2007 compliance deadline.  Payment for insurance claims may be denied if a social worker does not provide an NPI after May 23. Details about the NPI for social workers are provided in several NASW publications and by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS). Links to these resources are provided here.
