PRACTICE ADVANCES AND SUPPORT

New Practice Perspectives—Domestic Violence and Women of Color: Complex Dynamics

Available to NASW Members Only
Though domestic violence, also called intimate partner violence, is not limited to any one socioeconomic, ethnic, racial, or religious group, the burden of exposure for racial minorities to domestic violence is reported to be significantly high. Women of color experience domestic violence at disproportionately high rates. For social workers, providing culturally competent services that address the needs and safety of abused women of color is an essential component to understanding and speaking to this problem. ADVOCACY
Social Work Reinvestment Act Reintroduced. Email Congress Letters in Support of This Vital Legislation
NASW’s First Virtual Lobby Day is April 28

NASW state and national leaders will be in Washington, DC to lobby their members of Congress on Thursday, April 28, 2011 in support of the Dorothy I. Height and Whitney M. Young, Jr. Social Work Reinvestment Act (H.R. 1106/S. 584).

You can help ensure that this lobby day is as effective as possible by emailing your Representative and Senators or calling them in support of this legislation by Thursday, April 28.
While the nation struggles with an economic recession, social workers are the professionals who will primarily keep society’s social safety net intact. We provide the services that will help people maintain employment, shelter, food, and other life-sustaining services during this difficult time. We also care for the aging baby boomers, children in need, and individuals experiencing mental health challenges. Social workers currently serve over 10 million people each day, and that number will continue to grow. By investing in the profession of social work now, our nation can save money and improve outcomes in the long run.

The Dorothy I. Height and Whitney M. Young, Jr. Social Work Reinvestment Act (H.R. 1106/S. 584) strives to help social workers maintain society’s safety net and keep pace with the demand for our services.  This legislation will form a reinvestment commission to review workforce challenges and help to determine how we can continue to provide services and resources to individuals, families, and communities in need. Send your Representative and Senators our prewritten letters asking them to cosponsor and actively work to ensure passage of the Dorothy I. Height and Whitney M. Young, Jr. Social Work Reinvestment Act.

We appreciate the letters of support sent from over 100,000 social workers since the bill was first introduced. Please take a moment to send a new letter today.

NASW News Both current and past issues of the NASW NEWS are available online 24/7. All you need to access these issues is your NASW username and password. Here are highlights from the May 2011 issue:
Sadness and Social Work
By Elizabeth J. Clark, PhD, ACSW, MPH
During the last few months, the world has been filled with turmoil, tragedy, and unrest. Social workers regularly witness the daily crises and turmoil of our communities and of our clients. We can be saddened by their situations and their losses, some of which become personal losses and have a lasting impact on us. In these cases, we need to find a way to capture the memory and put it in a proper place, so we can move on in our professional lives.

“Dual Degrees” Bring Social Work Perspective to Other Fields
It’s not uncommon for social workers to enjoy varied careers. Some people discover their social work calling later in life. Others say their social work education served as a springboard for a different career direction.

Briefing Urges National Standards in Child Maltreatment Cases
In an effort to address the rising number of child maltreatment deaths in America, U.S. Rep. David Camp, R-Mich., sponsored an April congressional briefing on the topic. The briefing was hosted by the Coalition to End Child Abuse Deaths, of which NASW is a member.

Supreme Court Hears Wal-Mart Class Action Case
Do the 1.5 million women employed by Wal-Mart for any period of time since December 26, 1998, have the right to file a class action lawsuit against the retail chain over discriminatory pay and promotion policies and practices in violation of Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964? Attorneys debated that question before U.S. Supreme Court justices on March 29 during oral arguments in the matter of Wal-Mart Stores Inc. v. Dukes, for which NASW and others filed an amicus brief insisting yes, they do have that right.
