SUICIDE PREVENTION
National Suicide Prevention Week, World Suicide Prevention Day Observed in September
September 4-10, 2011, marks National Suicide Prevention Week, which coincides with World Suicide Prevention Day, held on September 10 of every year.  All NASW members are encouraged to participate in these observances and raise awareness of suicide prevention resources.

  • Toolkit for Suicide Prevention with Adolescent Girls. The NASW SHIFT Project for Suicide Prevention with Adolescent Girls toolkit is a step-by-step online resource to help you make the case and make the shift to evidence-based programs (EBPs) in your practice, agency, or community. The kit provides tools to help you assess your community and readiness for shifting to EBPs, organize state teams to advance evidence-based practices, and select and implement evidence-based practices. White House Reverses Longstanding Policy on Condolence Letters

On July 6, 2011, President Obama issued a statement that effective on this date family members of service members who die by suicide in a combat zone will receive a letter of condolence from the President of the United States. President Obama’s decision is a reversal of a longstanding policy not to send these families condolence letters.  Read more here.
  • Adolescent Depression and Suicide Risk: How Social Workers Can Make a Difference. Adolescent depression and suicide represent the more difficult side of growing up. This Practice Perspective reviews statistics, symptoms, and risk factors related to these issues, including bullying.   • Learn About Veterans Health Issues and Available Medical and Financial Support

    The Veterans Health Council, of which NASW is a member, works to inform veterans of America’s three most recent wars—Vietnam War, Persian Gulf War, and Global War on Terror—about health issues associated with military service during these conflicts, such as PTSD, and of medical and financial support that may be available to affected veterans and their families.  Learn more at www.veteranshealth.org.
    National Suicide Prevention Lifeline. The National Suicide Prevention Lifeline is a national, federally funded network of local crisis centers providing suicide prevention and intervention services through a toll-free telephone number: 1-800-273-TALK (8255) (Spanish-speaking callers: 1-888-628-9454). Its mission is to provide immediate assistance to individuals in suicidal crisis by connecting them to the nearest available crisis center in their area.   • Veterans Crisis Line. The Veterans Crisis Line is a Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) resource that connects Veterans in crisis or their families and friends with qualified, caring VA professionals. The Veterans Crisis Line was established as a partnership between the VA, the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, and the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline. Reminder: NASW Bylaws Amendment Process

Proposed bylaws amendments for consideration by the NASW Board of Directors must be submitted by September 1, 2011. Proposed amendments may be submitted by individual members in good standing. Proposed bylaws amendments related to Delegate Assembly and the NASW National/Chapter dues allocation must follow the Delegate Assembly process and timeline. All other bylaws amendments are within the authority of the NASW Board of Directors. For information related to the National Board amendment submission process, click here.
