Credentials

NASW has been offering credentials to social workers for more than 45 years starting with the ACSW.  Three credentials and seven specialty certifications are currently available (five for MSW’s and two for BSW’s).

NASW specialty certifications and other professional credentials provide recognition to those who have met national standards for higher levels of experience and knowledge, and are not a substitute for required state licenses or certifications.

Certified Advanced Children, Youth, and Family Social Worker (C-ACYFSW) - The definition of “children, youth, and family social work” is: to provide services to, or on behalf of, individuals who are under the age of 18, and to the members of their households. Social work services are provided for the purpose of improving social and psychological functioning, providing support, and understanding the issues and concerns that affect them.  This certification recognizes professional social workers (at the bachelor’s level) within this field.

Certified School Social Work Specialist (C-SSWS) - The definition of “children, youth, and family social work” is: to provide services to, or on behalf of, individuals who are under the age of 18, and to the members of their households. Social work services are provided for the purpose of improving social and psychological functioning, providing support, and understanding the issues and concerns that affect them.  This certification recognizes professional social workers (at the master’s level) within this field.
