Campaign 2000’s New Deal: Saving Social Security
Strengthening Social Security: a Gore
Priority
WASHINGTON—Preserving
Social Security and guaranteeing retirement security has become an important
issue in this year’s campaign. The National Association of Social Workers (NASW)
supports Al Gore’s plan to reform social security and to help American’s save
for the future.
As babyboomers age and begin to retire, there will be
fewer workers than retirees, creating a gap in the Social Security fund. Al
Gore’s plan promises to "strengthen social security in a way that preserves the
fundamental guarantee of retirement security, and also pays down [the national]
debt, keeps the economy strong, and enables us to meet other great
challenges."
Social Workers have had an impact on social security
from its inception. By privatizing even a small percentage of social security,
it threatens the benefits of future generations, possibly increasing the
disparity between rich and poor. NASW supports Gore’s efforts to give everyone
an opportunity to reap the benefits of the booming economy while not risking the
current benefit plan and "maintaining Social Security as a bedrock guarantee of
retirement security."

workers with 153,000 members. It promotes, develops and protects the practice of
social work and social workers. NASW also seeks to enhance the well being of
individuals, families and communities through its work and through its
