Michael Anthony Burke Receives the National Association of Social Workers Foundation (NASWF) 2003 Verne LaMarr Lyons Memorial MSW Scholarship

Washington — The National Association of Social Workers Foundation (NASWF) is pleased to announce Michael Anthony Burke as the recipient of the 2003 Verne LaMarr Lyons Memorial Scholarship. The scholarship is awarded yearly to a masters degree candidate in social work who demonstrates an interest in, or has experience with, health/mental health practice, and who has a commitment to working in the African American community. 

Mr. Burke, a former foster child, has overcome tremendous odds to become a successful substance abuse counselor, providing social work services for individuals and families involved in the criminal justice system. In addition, he provides substance abuse care for clients who are on parole within the city of Bridgeport, Conn.

Mr. Burke is committed to helping convicted criminals who have no support elsewhere. For example, he serves as a house manager at a halfway house for convicted felons, providing case management services to assist these individuals adjust to a successful role in society.
