Social Work Student Stephanie Gore Receives Verne LaMarr Lyons Memorial MSW Scholarship
NASW Foundation gives Norfolk State University student award for work with African Americans
Washington, DC – The National Association of Social Workers Foundation is proud to announce that Stephanie Gore will receive the Verne LaMarr Lyons Memorial MSW Scholarship for the 2006-2007.
This scholarship is awarded to MSW candidates who express an interest in or work with the African American community through practice in health or mental health services. Scholarship recipients work in hospitals, medical clinics, and social services agencies that provide treatment and specialized services to African American patients.
Since receiving her BSW in 1998, Gore has been helping African American children and families to empower themselves to succeed within their situation. She has worked for several agencies in inner city areas largely servicing the African American community. Gore currently works at the Norfolk Community Services Board providing prevention services to promote healthy lifestyles for students in middle school, within families and throughout the community.
Gore will continue working with inner city populations, specifically she would like to develop and implement more opportunities for students within inner city schools to have more accessible mental health services available to them and their families.
