NASW Congratulates James J. Kelly on Appointment to Presidency of Menlo College

Current NASW President Tapped to Lead Premier Business College

The National Association of Social Workers (NASW) congratulates its current President, James J. Kelly, PhD, ACSW, on his appointment to the presidency of Menlo College, effective January 1, 2011.  Dr. Kelly has served as the Provost (Chief Academic Officer) and Executive Vice President of the College since 2007. He has worked closely with outgoing President G. Timothy Haight in carrying out the mission to turn Menlo College into a premier business college.

“Dr. Kelly has brought a wealth of talent and experience to the leadership of NASW.  His diverse background and widespread experience as a social work educator and university administrator will be a great benefit to Menlo College,” says Elizabeth J. Clark, Ph.D, ACSW, MPH, executive director of NASW.

Dr. Kelly received his Ph.D. from Brandeis University in Policy, Planning and Administration in Social Welfare, his MSSW from the University of Tennessee, and his BS in Secondary Education from Edinboro University in Pennsylvania.

Before joining Menlo, Dr. Kelly served the California State University system having been the Interim Provost overseeing a $120 million budget, and Associate Vice President, Division of Continuing and International Education for California State University, East Bay (CSUEB).  Prior to working at CSUEB, Dr. Kelly was the Dean of Health and Human Services and Acting Dean of Continuing Education at California State University, Los Angeles (CSULA), and a professor and Department of Social Work Director at California State University, Long Beach.

At Menlo College, CSULA, and CSUEB, Dr. Kelly has been responsible for the Western Association of Schools and Colleges reaffirmation of accreditation, overseeing significant faculty hiring, and development and implementation of campus policy, procedures, and strategic planning.

In addition to his teaching and administrative duties at Menlo College, Dr. Kelly has garnered $35 million in grants, contracts, endowments, and gifts, primarily through community collaborations in the child welfare and aging areas. Former consultant to the United Nations, he is a strong advocate for social justice.

Dr. Kelly was President of the NASW California Chapter, and active in the Tennessee, Massachusetts, and Hawaii Chapters. He is immediate Past-President of the California Institute of Mental Health; board member of the National Network for Social Work Managers; and founding editorial board member of the Journal of Women and Aging. He was named 1987 National Social Worker of the Year for work in developing services for people with AIDS.
