Statement
on the September 11th Tragedies in New York, Pennsylvania, and
Washington, DC
September 13, 2001
The National Association of Social Workers (NASW) is shocked
and appalled by the recent act of terrorism against the United States.
These senseless actions have devastated lives, families, and our
national sense of security. Our 153,000 members fully support the
President and Congress in their efforts to find the perpetrators
and bring them to justice.
Our countrys greatness is evident in so many ways, but our
resilience, compassion, and commitment to human dignity are central
to who we are. As we move forward in responding to this weeks
tragedy, let us all recognize the strength we have within to
endure difficult times, and the responsibility we each share
to help our
nation heal.
Social workers in the United
States and around the world are prepared to play a vital role in
the recovery process. We know that the wounds both
physical and psychological created by the unspeakable violence
we witnessed on September 11 will need time to heal. Many of NASWs
members are already part of professional teams or volunteers
dealing with the after effects of the terrorist actions.
As members of the human family, everyone in our country will struggle
with a wide range of intense emotions in the coming weeks. We grieve
for the victims, their families, and friends. However, our national
unity, commitment to democracy, and respect for and acceptance of
all persons regardless of race, ethnicity, cultural background and
religious beliefs, can sustain us through this stressful time and
help us cope with our immense loss.
Social workers the nations largest group of mental
health service providers remind citizens that asking for
help is a sign of strength, not weakness. NASW encourages all
families
and individuals in need to seek assistance through counseling
organizations and resources in their communities (see Helpful
Web Resources and NASW Register
of Clinical Social Workers).
