Insurance Carrier for NASW Members Makes Major Disaster Relief Contributions

WASHINGTON—Dr. Gayle Cox, chair of the NASW Insurance Trust, would like to inform the social work community that The Principal Financial Group Foundation, Inc., of Des Moines, Iowa, is contributing $2 million to disaster relief efforts in New York, Washington, DC, and Pennsylvania, with some of it earmarked specifically for mental health/social work counseling.

"The NASW Insurance Trust has, since 1967, been doing business with and currently provides group insurance policies to some 34,000 NASW members through The Principal Life Insurance Company, an affiliate of The Principal Financial Group," noted Loretta Robinson, Trust director. "The Principal covers NASW members with term life, long term disability, hospital daily cash, and accident insurance, and is a top-rated carrier in the global insurance industry that has served this Association well and without interruption," she added. "On behalf of Dr. Cox and the Trustees," said Robinson, "we commend The Principal for its timely and generous donations for disaster relief services during this sad time. It is deeds such as this that unite and strengthen us and help with our healing as a nation."

"I was very touched that The NASW Insurance Trust’s account manager at The Principal, Eric Goyke, started calling us in Washington on Tuesday afternoon to check on us," Robinson reported. "When we finally connected, I mentioned in our conversation that social workers comprise the major portion of counselors and mental health professionals in the American Red Cross.*** Soon after, I learned from Eric that The Principal wanted us to know that its Foundation is announcing a $500,000 contribution to the Red Cross for various relief services, including counseling and bereavement services, much of which comes from social workers. In addition, another $250,000 was designated to the United Way in New York for mental health services."
