Atascadero State Hospital, Atascadero California
Psychiatric Social Worker
Salary Range: $3661-413 9/month; $400/mo R&R unlicensed, $600/mo licensed

Who we are
Atascadero State Hospital would like to assist a social worker displaced by Hurricane Katrina to relocate and become part of our team at ASH.  We can offer an applicant reimbursement up to $1000.00 for travel expenses for the interview process, and up to $1000 for relocation expenses if the applicant is offered and accepts a position.  The Social Work Department may also be willing to assist the applicant in making the transition to the Central Coast of California.

Located on California's Central coast, midway between San Francisco and Los Angeles, Atascadero State Hospital (ASH) is an all-male, maximum security, forensic facility serving the entire state of California. ASH opened in 1954 and is a completely self-contained psychiatric hospital constructed within a security perimeter. ASH has a licensed capacity of 1,239 beds, and employs over 2,000 staff. Patients are referred to the hospital by Superior Courts, the Department of Corrections, Board of Prison Terms, and other state hospitals.

Vision
ASH  leads in developing and providing state-of-the-art, dispositionally relevant, mental health care for forensic patients. We provide our patients with biopsychosocial rehabilitation opportunities that prepare them to reintegrate successfully into their communities.

We provide our staff with rewarding work experiences and empower them to design, measure, evaluate, and continuously improve the programs and services they provide. Quality is fostered by encouraging all staff and patients to identify opportunities for improvement and to participate in creating solutions.

We create for our staff and patients a safe working environment in which conflicts are resolved in an atmosphere of mutual respect and dignity.

Philosophy
We believe that mental disorders arise out of and affect physical, psychological, and social functioning, and cause disruption of the person’s life. We believe that mental disorders are treatable. We strive to assist our patients in becoming and remaining healthy, so that they may return to their community, as stable and as independent as possible.

We believe that the process of providing expert clinical evaluation and treatment for mentally ill forensic patients takes place most effectively in an environment which fosters innovation, creative problem-solving, mutual respect, and a dynamic, therapeutic milieu, characterized by collaboration between staff, patients, and external agencies

Qualifications
Licensed: Possession of a valid license as a Licensed Clinical Social Worker issued by the California Board of Behavioral Science Examiners.  (Applicants who are in the process of securing their license from the California Board of Behavioral Science Examiners will be admitted to the examination, but must secure a valid license before they will be considered eligible for appointment.)  Individuals who do not qualify for licensure by the California Board of Behavioral Science Examiners may be admitted into the examination and may be appointed but must secure a valid license within four years of appointment; however, an individual can be employed only to the extent necessary to be eligible for licensure plus one year.  An extension of the waiver may be granted for one additional year based on extenuating circumstances, as provided by Section 1277(e) of the Health and Safety Code.  The time duration for unlicensed employment does not apply to active doctoral candidates in social work, social welfare, or social service, until the completion of such training.

Unlicensed individuals who are recruited from outside the State of California and who qualify for licensure may take the examination and may be appointed for a maximum of one year at which time licensure shall have been obtained or the employment shall be terminated; an extension of the waiver may be granted for an additional one year based on extenuating circumstances, as provided by Section 1277(e) of the Health and Safety Code.  Individuals granted an additional one year based on extenuating circumstances may be appointed for a maximum of two years at which time licensure shall have been obtained or the employment shall be terminated.  Additionally, they must take the licensure examination at the earliest possible date after the date of employment.

Although the above sounds foreboding and makes it appear that you only have 1 or 2 years to get your license, the reality is that if a candidate does not try to base their ability to sit for the CA exams on equivalent training and experience from their other states, they may be able to start from scratch here in CA and have four years to get their supervision.  In addition, our social work department provides excellent supervision and training both for the licensing exam and as proctors for new employees to help navigate the forensic hospital environment.

Education:  Completion of a master's degree program from an accredited school of social work, approved by the Council on Social Work Education or equivalent degree approved by the Bureau for Private Postsecondary and Vocational Education under the provisions of California Education Code Division 10, Part 59, Chapter 3.
