CALL FOR PAPERS

Research Symposium on the Politics of Race, Culture, and Health

The Department of Health Policy Studies in the School of Health Sciences and Human Performance in collaboration with the Office of Multicultural Affairs at Ithaca College announces a Call for Original Research Papers exploring the relationships between the politics of race, culture, and health. Recent studies have documented the disparities in public health and health services between racial groups. This symposium would like to focus on what is being done about these disparities. Topics the symposium is interested in covering include:

  • formation of health policies as they pertain to race and culture
  • application of public health and environment laws in diverse communities
  • ethnographic accounts of groups, communities, or families negotiating health issues
  • development and evaluation of social marketing campaigns aimed at specific groups based on race and culture
  • social, class, and ethnic barriers and challenges faced by those who seek medical care or public health services
  • the epidemiology of race, culture, and health
  • actions to overcome racism in environmental and health situations

Five hundred (500) word abstracts should be submitted for review no later than September 3, 2002. Proposers will be notified of acceptance no later than September 25, 2002. Authors are expected to be present at the Symposium on November 14, 2002 at Ithaca College in Ithaca, N.Y. to present their completed papers and to participate as Health Policy Scholars in Residence. The Symposium papers will be published. Funding will be available for transportation, room, and board.
