Host or Attend an Event
World Social Work Day on March 15 is shaping up to be a critical event day for this year’s Social Work Month activities. March 31 will also be a big day for related events. Groups of social workers from across the country are now organizing to “meet-up” and “tweet-up” during the day on March 15 and on March 31 to garner public awareness and support for the social work profession.

The idea began with a group of social work leaders in Pennsylvania and is now spreading to other groups within the profession. Hundreds of social work practitioners, students and educators are expected to wear Social Work Month t-shirts and hats while distributing simple fliers and brochures that educate passersby about what the profession does for the community. Groups will hopefully take pictures of their activities and post the information on YouTube, Twitter and Facebook.

In addition to the meet-ups on March 15 and March 31, several NASW Chapters host their annual state conferences during March. Check your chapter’s website for dates and times of these great CE events. Conferences allow you to connect with and learn from social workers in all disciplines across the state—while meeting your CE requirements for the year.

Also remember that special events, such as fundraisers, engage participants and create allies. They can help your organization court new supporters, thank existing ones and showcase social work success stories. Fundraising events can also attract positive attention from the media, policymakers and local opinion leaders.

Whether your purpose is to give an award, provide a lecture, or coordinate a panel discussion, special events can be an effective way to communicate clear messages about the social work profession to a captive audience.
