Celebrate Social Work Month 2012

Social Work Matters LogoNASW Activities

Social Work Month begins March 1.  Here’s what NASW is doing to celebrate and promote the profession.  There are many ways to be involved.

Social Work Month Toolkit: The Case for Social Work

At the 2010 Social Work Congress, social work leaders adopted an imperative to "build a data-driven business case that demonstrates the distinctive expertise and the impact and value of social work to industry, policymakers and the general public." Since 2005, the National Social Work Public Education Campaign, which is funded by the NASW Foundation, has increased knowledge about the range of services social workers provide to individuals, families and communities. However, the next phase of this campaign seeks to explain how much society needs social workers. New tools are available in the 2012 outreach toolkit to help make the case with a variety of stakeholders.  How-to tips for reaching out to different audiences can be found in previous Social Work Month toolkits included in this resource.

NASW on NPR

The National Public Radio (NPR) audience is comprised of more than 20 million daily listeners who are not only interested in social issues, but are also active in their communities. This respected media outlet is a good place to remind Americans who social workers are, and what they are doing for our nation's well-being. Donations to the NASW Foundation through March 2012 are funding sponsorship ads on three popular NPR programs: Morning Edition, The Diane Rehm Show and Wait, Wait, Don’t Tell Me! Sponsorship messages can be heard March 5 – 17 on your local NPR station.

Social Work Media Awards

Every week, social workers are featured in a variety of print, broadcast and online news stories and programs. These stories depict social work contributions in health, mental health, aging, schools, veteran’s services, community agencies, local politics and more. The best stories and programs often showcase hope, resilience and sound public policy. NASW tracks this coverage through a website called SocialWorkersSpeak.org and the organization works to shape news and entertainment programming—locally and nationally—through targeted media outreach. In 2012, NASW will shine a spotlight on the best media reporting and depictions of social work issues. Social workers have already nominated compelling stories and programs from 2011.  Make sure you vote online March 1-31 at www.SocialWorkersSpeak.org for your favorite entries.  Award winners will be announced in April.

World Social Work Day is March 20, 2012

On World Social Work Day 2012, the Final Global Agenda on Social Work and Social Development will be officially submitted to the U.N. Secretary General. NASW Past President Gary Bailey is the current president of the International Federation of Social Workers (IFSW), the group responsible for crafting the Global Agenda.  Find out more at www.ifsw.org
