MILESTONES IN THE
|
May, 1998
Dear Social Work Colleagues,
On the occasion of the Centennial Anniversary of Professional Social Work, the National Association of Social Workers and Council on Social Work Education have embarked on a number of joint projects to commemorate this landmark birthday. It is our intention to celebrate this event in various ways and to use the centennial as an opportunity to showcase our profession to the broader public.
Among the activities that are on the drawing board is the preparation of a centennial document which will highlight milestone events in the development of our profession. We are asking all social work practitioners and educators to join in this venture by submitting milestone events that might be included in the historical document. We are especially seeking items that concern minority groups --- racial, ethnic, social class, religious, gender and sexual orientation.
There exists a listing of Milestones in the Development of Social Work and Social Welfare by Robert L. Barker, published in the Social Work Dictionary (NASW Press, 1995). This listing traces the roots of social work from pre-biblical times to the present and it can serve as a basis for a more comprehensive centennial document. Our plan is to supplement this historical listing with additional minority content. Please participate in this project by sending your thoughts and ideas regarding possible historical entries.
It would be most useful if you would provide specific information, including dates and appropriate references whenever possible. Please mail your comments/suggestions to:

Deadline for receipt of material is September 10, 1998. We will keep you informed of other plans for the celebration as the 1998 centennial year unfolds.
In the meantime, Happy Birthday to us all!
Sincerely,
