Marsena Buck, a California Chapter member who served on a number of NASW national committees and was director of Stanislaus County (California) Department of Social Services, died Oct. 5, 2000. She was 62.

Director of social services from 1985 until her retirement in 1995, Buck was deputy director for six years before that. She received a bachelor's degree in geography from the University of Calfornia at Los Angeles and a master's degree in social work from the University of Southern California in 1965.

She held several positions in Los Angeles County, including child welfare supervisor and director of a juvenile hall, before leaving for Stanislaus County in 1979.

"I really got hooked on people, particularly people who are struggling at the bottom rung of the ladder," Buck said in a 1995 interview. "I think people should be given the chance to be the best they should be. I really believe that people behave better, in their whole life experience, if they are valued."

Buck served on several chapter and national NASW committees, including the Professional Development and Advocacy Committee, Delegate Assembly Planning Committee, Political Action for Candidate Election Board of Trustees and the Committee on Inquiry. She also formerly chaired the California Board of Behavioral Sciences.
