From June 2001 NASW NEWS School social workers' participation is "crucial" to the project. NASW is working in partnership with the Healthy Lesbian, Gay and Bisexual Students Project, housed at the American Psychological Association, to strengthen the capacity of schools to stem the behavioral health risks of gay, lesbian and bisexual students through continuing education and training for school social workers and other professionals. As a partner, NASW has agreed to facilitate the presentation of workshops through several chapters each year, with sites to be selected on criteria such as whether the schools in a chapter's state employ school social workers. La Voyce Reid, NASW senior staff associate for children, families and schools, said the participation of school social workers is crucial to the project. "School social workers are critical members of the student's educational team. They are instrumental in providing direct and nondirect services targeted toward students, parents and families, and educators," she said. The goal is to develop continuing education content and training to assist school social workers, counselors, nurses and psychologists to meet the health needs of lesbian, gay and bisexual youth. The project will focus on: health services; health education; counseling, psychological and social services; healthy school environment; and family and community involvement. The education and training component of the project will be based on a needs assessment that will entail interviews of key informants, review of the professional literature and a national survey.
