Clinical social workers in private practice who meet HIPAA's "health care provider" definition, transmit health information electronically or use business associations to do so must obtain National Provider Identifier (NPI) numbers by May 2007 in order to be reimbursed by third-party payers and to be compliant with HIPAA regulations. Many payers are requesting that providers obtain NPIs up to six months earlier. To apply: click here
