NASW Specialty Practice Section Newsletter Author Guidelines

The National Association of Social Workers (NASW) Specialty Practice Sections (SPS) consists of eleven specialty areas — Administration/Supervision; Aging; Alcohol, Tobacco, and Other Drugs; Child Welfare; Children, Adolescents and Young Adults; Health; Mental Health; Private Practice; School Social Work; Social and Economic Justice & Peace, and Social Work and the Courts.

 

Specialty Practice Sections, (SPS) is committed to providing relevant and timely products and resources to our practicing social work members. We invite authors to write articles on topics of interest, according to the following guidelines:

 

Audience Information

Members of the Specialty Practice Sections work in a variety of practice settings with diverse populations and cultures using a broad spectrum of modalities Authors may assume our readers subscribe to a similar professional theoretical foundation, core values and code of ethics. Our readers are comprised of professionals and students.

 

Article Information

Articles must provide information that is useful, relevant, and of interest to the SPS audience. Ideas for topics might include new practice modalities, new clinical research, case studies, or how social workers might address prominent social issues. Article submissions should provide comprehensive information in a succinct manner. This should include brief vibrant paragraphs, the avoidance of jargon and overly complicated terminology, clear and concise sentences, and when necessary bulleted or listed items.

 

Submissions should be composed in a scholarly-informed, professional writing style. Thought-provoking content is appreciated.

 

Submissions are expected to build on existing knowledge in the topic area. As the writing style for the SPS newsletters is scholarly-informed, professional writing, all submissions must include at least one reference. The reference citation should follow APA style, as set forth in the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (6th edition). References must be no more than 10 years old and author’s self-citations will not be used.

 

Article length should be at least two pages no more than five or 2500 words maximum. All articles should be submitted in 12-point type, Times New Roman font, double-spaced, in Microsoft Word (.doc) or rich text format (.rtf). Submit articles to Sections@naswdc.org.

 

Author Information

Author must be a social worker or co-author with a social worker. Every article should be accompanied by the author’s full name, highest degree and any licenses or certifications, job title, and employing organization. Please indicate if the author is an MSW or ACSW. An e-mail address for the author(s) is encouraged.

 

Example:
Jay Smith, is a clinical instructor, Department of Psychiatry, Louisiana State University Medical Center, in New Orleans. She can be contacted at Jsmith@org.

 

Selection
The decision to include articles in the newsletter or in any other practice publication is at the discretion of NASW. NASW will attempt to preserve the author's voice, but all accepted articles will be edited for space and clarity according to the NASW’s style and format.
