Social Work Ethics Summit
NASW hosted the 2006 Social Work Ethics Summit in Washington, DC on September 8 and 9, 2006 where a diverse group of social work participants from various segments of the profession examined and addressed the relevance of the NASW Code of Ethics in today’s practice world. The Summit was co-sponsored by the Legal Defense Fund with the support of the Aileen Neely Fund and the NASW National Ethics Committee with support from the Wichers’ Ethics Education Fund.  Participants at the Summit generally agreed that the NASW Code of Ethics remains as a valid expression of the social work profession’s core principles and values. The Summit recommendations suggested that the focus of new efforts should be on developing educational, practice and evaluation tools, as well as strengthening the collaborations between NASW and other major social work organizations to enhance social work practice and the application of the Code of Ethics. The Social Work Ethics Summit Summary Report & Recommendations was published and distributed to the NASW Board of Directors, Summit participants and all NASW Chapters. This included a state-by-state chart of state laws and regulations that have incorporated the NASW Code of Ethics into their provisions.Â
