Two Online Teleconference Series Provide Free CEUs

NASW is currently offering two teleconference series through which NASW members can earn continuing education units. NASW's Lunchtime Series is open to all members and provides updates on NASW activities and projects. The Specialty Practic Sections Teleconference Series offers section members practice-specific content.

Both teleconference series provide 1 CEU per class, after participants have completed an online test. Audio recordings and transcripts of each teleconference are also posted online, two days after the teleconference takes place.

The Lunchtime Series teleconferences run from 1 to 2 p.m. Eastern Time. Members can register online for each teleconference. The series will include the following programs:

  • The Psychosocial Aspects of Working with Clients That Have Life-Threatening Illnesses. Presented by Katherine Walsh, this program covers essential practice knowledge and skill such as comperehensive biopsychospiritual assessment with ecomaps and genograms, distress management, advance directives, and grief interventions. It will be held on Tuesday, Nov. 18.
  • Exploring Common Ethical Dilemmas in Today's Workplace. Presenter Dawn Hobdy will inform social workers of the most common ethical issues faced in the workplace and will equip them with tools to recognize potential conflicts and make the best ethical decisions. It will be held Thursday, Dec. 4.
  • Social Work Reinvestment Initiative: Building on Successes at the State Level. Elizabeth Franklin will present an update on the social work workforce initiative launched in 2006, including information on the Dorothy I. Height and Whitney M. Young Jr. Social Work Reinvestment Initiative, as well as progress made by NASW chapters as they address title protection, loan forgiveness, licensure, and social work education programs. It will be held on Tuesday, Jan. 27.
  • The Political Power of Social Work. The transcript and audio recording of this program, held in October, are posted online. The program offered information about political social work as a practice setting and as a tool for practice and provided resources and ways to be engaged politically.

The Specialty Practice Section Teleconference series is also held from 1 to 2 p.m. Eastern Time. Section members can register for the teleconferences online. The programs include:

  • Adolescent Suicide Prevention and Intervention. This program, presented by Stacey Freedenthal and moderated by Queen Assaye-Drake, describes suicide risk factors, assessment, and interventions, and addresses race and sexual orientation as risk factors, assessment of intent, antidepressents, and no-suicide contracts. It will be held Monday, Dec. 10.
  • Promoting Treatment Adherence for Clients Living with a Chronic Illness: The ADHERE Model. Presenter Nathank Linsk explores individual and environmental factors known to affect medication adherence and uses a holistic practice model to highlight factors that affect adherence. Evelyn Tomaszewski will moderate. The teleconference will be held Tuesday, Feb. 19.
  • Difficult Ethics Cases in Social Work: The Art of Decision Making. Frederick Reamer will present this program on ethical dilemmas related to client confidentiality and privacy, informed consent, paternalism, conflicts of interest, dual relationships and boundaries, termination of services, and documentation. It is moderated by Dawn Hobdy. This Social Work Month bonus teleconference provides 2 CEUs and takes place from 1 to 3 p.m. on Tuesday, March 10.
  • Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI), PTSD and Substance Abuse. The transcript and audio recording of this program, offered in October, is posted online. Presented by Sutart Kaufer and Albert R. Jennings, the program covered issues related to TBI, post-traumatic stress disorder, and substance abuse, which is positively associated with the likelihood of sustaining a TBI.
  • Theoretical Foundations and Competencies in Hospice Care that are Essential to Social Workers. The transcript and recording of this previously presented program is also online. Presenters Sherri Weisenfluh and Cleo V.H. Lloyd covered resources for competency development and offered details on competencies needed for a specialty credential for advance practice hospice and palliative care social workers.
