WASHINGTON, D.C. - The National Association of Social Workers (NASW), the largest professional social work organization in the nation, today sent a petition to President Trump and Congressional leaders, urging them to fund the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) before funds run out on Nov. 1. An average of 41.7 million Americans use the program each month in our nation, and many face hunger if the benefits are cut.

The petition was signed by 6,635 social workers from around the nation. Many social workers work directly with needy families, older adults, and people living with disabilities and know the importance of nutritious food. There are also broader economic impacts of losing this essential benefit, which will have a cascading effect on big and small businesses and the larger U.S. economy.

The petition read in part: "Food insecurity is a non-partisan issue our country has worked hard to tackle, so that older adults don't have to choose between paying for medication and their next meal, children don't go to school hungry and unable to focus, and families aren't having to portion out meals until the next paycheck."

NASW is urging President Trump and Congressional leaders to end the government shutdown and continue to fund SNAP. Many members of Congress have been long-term supporters of the program, and the association asks they continue that support and make sure American families do not go hungry.
