Rae Johnson “I had been involved with NASW-Michigan since I was a BSW student and in different capacities as a member,” says Rae Johnson, LLMSW-Macro, president of the NASW Michigan Chapter.

Johnson, coordinator of practicum education at Oakland University’s social work program in Rochester Hills, Mich., said she sought the president position to be more active with her chapter. “Being a part of the board always intrigued and excited me,” she said. Being a leader in policy and social justice initiatives inspired her as well.

“I enjoyed connecting with other social workers (who) did policy work,” said Johnson, whose other roles with the chapter include being a delegate and serving on the anti-racism committee.

“I really enjoyed building that community. I was not even thinking about a board position. Being on committees, and the board members themselves, made it a welcoming environment.”

Johnson was working in a group home when a social worker there suggested she would earn more with a social work degree.

“I went to an informational at Oakland University and I connected with some really great social workers,” she said. “What they shared showed me I wanted to be involved in places that advocate for social justice at a macro level.”

Now, 10 years later, Johnson is teaching at the university. “It’s a full-circle moment,” she said.

Volunteering time for your professional association helps make a difference, Johnson says. “Having folks who really want to work, building community and macro social work helps bridge that gap. Our board is so diverse. Everyone has a mission and vision to get us where we want to be.”

“Our current board members serve as excellent role models,” Johnson adds. “They offer support and guidance across our state. They want to give back to the profession.”
