Breath Work and Drawing - Professional Self-Care with Mind-Body Skills

VT Chapter - The first of a six-part series on zoom. 2 Formal CEs

Professional Self-Care with Mind-Body Skills - Breath Work and Drawing

Laurie Carrera, MSW, LICSW

2 Formal CEs approved by NASW VT

NASW Vermont Chapter is recognized by the New York State Education Department's State Board for Social Work as an approved provider of continuing education for licensed social workers #SW-0683.

The demanding nature of the social work profession often competes with the desire to implement or sustain self-care practices. Each of these six workshop-style webinars provides an opportunity for you to grow on a professional and personal level. Balancing self-care moments and survival mode is an ever-evolving challenge and this training aims to honor that journey. We  are best positioned to share and support self-care practices with the people and populations we serve, when we have established a foundation of health and wellness ourselves. This webinar will merge personal mind-body skills with presence and preparation as a professional. Each session includes a didactic, experiential and interactive component related to mind-body medicine skills and their application to overall health and wellness.  These skills are easily transferable to your work with clients.

Each week you will be invited to experience and practice a new technique including: breath work and drawings, autogenics and biofeedback, meditation and movement, guided imagery, emotions and journaling and mindful eating.

Breath Work and Drawing Learning Objectives

Participants will be able to:

  • Discuss how breath works in the body to create relaxation, improve our physical and emotional functioning, and enhance energy.
  • Explain meditation as a way to bring about changes in the body and mind.
  • Demonstrate drawings for self-exploration, expression and understanding.

About the presenter:

Laurie Carrera, MSW, LICSW

Laurie has been in private practice in NH for over ten years, specializing in anxiety management. As a past adjunct faculty with the University of New Hampshire, she weaved together her passion for teaching and learning. Laurie has significant experience working in non-traditional settings. She spent fifteen summers leading therapeutic outdoor adventure programs. Laurie has also worked in residential facilities, community mental health centers and schools. To balance work and play, Laurie joins her children as they dance, jump, sing and sprint through life. It is being with friends and family that brings Laurie the greatest joy. You will find her walking when she needs to reset and rejuvenate.

Laurie is a member of the Center for Mind-Body Medicine Faculty and certified in Mind-Body Medicine. She collaborates intensively with the Lewiston, Maine community in response to the October 25, 2023 shootings. Connecting with courageous children in groups is an honor and an opportunity for Laurie, as they remind her to trust in the energy, creativity and resiliency in us all.
