NASW was deeply troubled when it was widely reported that budget employees for the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) were told by their leadership that in preparing their fiscal 2019 budgets, they could not use seven specific words and phrases. The offensive words include vulnerable, entitlement, diversity, transgender, fetus, evidence-based, and science-based. This is extremely problematic because the targeted words help to describe populations and quality control standards that are essential for managing threats to the nation’s public health and well-being.
