Monitoring and Accountability
Blueprint of Public Policy Priorities for the 119th Congress, 2025-2026
As NASW advances its federal advocacy efforts, monitoring, and accountability remain crucial for ensuring that policies reflect the values and needs of the social work profession. The initiatives described below will enhance our capacity to track progress, engage members, and hold policymakers accountable.
Priority
Develop a clear, data-driven approach to monitor federal policy changes affecting the social work profession using a detailed Federal Policy Scorecard, regular progress reports, and strong member involvement in federal advocacy efforts.
Goal
To strengthen NASW’s position as a policy watchdog, we will implement systematic monitoring and accountability mechanisms. This will ensure that members are informed and empowered to advocate effectively.
Key Initiatives:
- Federal Policy Scorecard:
- Develop and release an annual scorecard evaluating congressional actions on key social work priorities
- Provide regular updates to members on legislative developments and policymakers' positions
- Ensure transparency in assessing congressional support for social work policies
- Progress Reports:
- Publish quarterly reports detailing federal policy changes, NASW’s advocacy efforts, and legislative outcomes
- Highlight successes, challenges, and areas requiring increased advocacy
- Provide data-driven analysis of the impact of policy shifts on social workers and the communities they serve
- Member Engagement in Federal Advocacy:
- Mobilize members to take action on critical policy issues through calls to action, advocacy toolkits, and grassroots organizing
- Facilitate direct engagement with legislators via advocacy days, town halls, and letter-writing campaigns
- Expand digital advocacy tools, including NASW’s advocacy alerts, social media campaigns, and online advocacy training
Expected Outcomes:
- Greater accountability of federal policymakers regarding social work-related issues
- Enhanced NASW member involvement in shaping national policy
- Improved legislative outcomes that support the social work profession and the communities it serves
By drawing on the expertise of our members and actively participating in both grassroots and grasstops advocacy, NASW is committed to amplifying the voices of those most affected by systemic inequities. This approach will enable us to drive meaningful change and ensure that the profession's influence continues well into the future.
