Blueprint of Public Policy Priorities for the 119th Congress, 2025-2026

Decorative Blue Bar

The National Association of Social Workers (NASW) is committed to advocating for policies that advance social justice, protect vulnerable populations, and uphold the dignity and well-being of individuals and communities. As we navigate the complex social, economic, and political challenges of our time, it is essential that we establish a clear and strategic policy framework to guide our efforts at the federal level.

This document serves as a blueprint for NASW’s federal policy priorities, outlining a comprehensive approach to addressing systemic inequities, expanding access to essential services, and reinforcing the role of social work in shaping a just and equitable society. Rooted in the core values of the social work profession—service, social justice, dignity and worth of the person, the importance of human relationships, integrity, and competence—this framework provides a roadmap for legislative and regulatory advocacy that will impact millions of lives.

Social work has long played a vital role in shaping policies that directly affect the well-being of individuals and families. As social workers, we are not only practitioners but also advocates, educators, and policymakers working to dismantle barriers to equity and inclusion. This framework reflects our profession’s enduring commitment to justice and fairness, ensuring that public policies address the needs of the most vulnerable among us, including children, older adults, individuals with disabilities, and historically marginalized communities.

NASW recognizes that effective policy change requires collaboration. As such, this framework is designed to engage stakeholders across sectors, including government agencies, nonprofit organizations, community leaders, and fellow advocates. By fostering partnerships and amplifying the voices of those with lived experiences, we can advance policies that promote holistic well-being, enhance economic stability, and ensure equitable access to healthcare, education, and social services.

Among the critical issues addressed in this framework are mental health parity, racial and social justice, child welfare reforms, economic security, and the protection of civil rights. These priorities reflect NASW’s unwavering dedication to the social work profession’s mission: to enhance human well-being and help meet the basic needs of all people, with particular attention to the most vulnerable. By leveraging research, advocacy, and direct practice, we can influence policies that create tangible and lasting improvements in the lives of individuals, families, and communities.

We extend our gratitude to the dedicated professionals and advocates who have contributed their expertise to the development of this blueprint. Your commitment ensures that NASW remains at the forefront of social change, championing policies that empower individuals and strengthen communities. This document is both a reflection of our shared values and a call to action—one that challenges all of us to continue striving for a society that upholds dignity, justice, and opportunity for all.

As we move forward in implementing this policy framework, we encourage social workers, policymakers, and advocates to engage with its principles and use it as a guide for meaningful action. Together, we can build a future where social work principles shape federal policies, creating lasting and transformative impact for generations to come.
