Sections Update July 9, 2026:
NASW is pleased to share an important update to one of its Specialty Practice Sections. The NASW National Board approved changing the name of the Alcohol, Tobacco and Other Drugs Specialty Practice Section to Substance Use Disorders and Other Addictive Behaviors (SUDAB). This change is now in effect.
The updated name better reflects the breadth of contemporary social work practice in this area and recognizes the wide range of substance use disorders and addictive behaviors that social workers address through prevention, treatment, recovery, advocacy, education, and policy.
In keeping with our commitment to environmental responsibility, some printed materials with the previous specialty practice name may remain in circulation for a limited time. These materials will be phased out throughout the year as existing inventory is replenished.
While the name has changed, the Specialty Practice Section's commitment to supporting social workers with high-quality resources, professional development opportunities, and a strong professional community remains the same.
